Hurt was originally written and performed by Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor). It was actually a pivotal NIN track -- long before the seminal Johnny Cash cover. [The dissonant note in the intro is an ode to the NIN original.]
However (just as Jimi Hendrix did with Bob Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower') Johnny Cash's sullen version of Hurt engendered a much deeper meaning -- and completely took over the consciousness of the song.
If you polled music fans that are 35 and under -- most have no idea that Hurt is actually a Nine Inch Nails song.
