TEACHING SUGGESTIONS
This is a fun rock’n roll style song that uses keyboard, bass and drums as backing with a saxophone for extra colour. Listen to the singer and notice how he changes his voice to create the different characters - normal for Mama, much deeper for Daddy and falsetto for Baby.
Each verse and chorus has spoken comments interspersed with the singing, and children will need to count the beats carefully to insert these comments in the right places. Create a beat circle which indicates where the rests and spoken notes are placed and point to each beat to help the children see how the words and rests fit in. A few children could play claves on the rests.
Three different bands/musicians/ styles are mentioned in this song-children may like to investigate each one further. Mama Crocodile is a Beatles fan, Daddy Crocodile is an MC Hammer fan and Baby Crocodile is a disco fan.
The phrase "little rest" is a musical, as well as a literal, comment and may lead to a discussion about rests in music. Explore the idea of "little rest" further by playing musical games with familiar songs which develop a feel for the silent beat, fo example, "Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes", and "Bingo”
Some children might want to make up actions to the song that could be taught to the whole class.
