I used the song Graveyard (by Halsey) to make a music video. The video is produced, directed, filmed, and edited all by myself. It took me about three weeks, including reserving the room, finding actors, shooting the scenes, and reproducing all footage. The cold, windy weather was a huge challenge.

I designed the storyline, which depicts a lovely friendship and its breakup. In the story, the narrator gets hurt in a bond, but I didn’t tell the reason explicitly because it can be anything. And the narrator is ‘digging herself down deeper’ to save the situation. In the end, when she is sitting on the bench surrounded by sunshine, she cuts their photograph, which doesn’t only mean the end of this friendship but also the narrator’s determination to be brave, more robust, and independent.

In real life, stories can not be that simple. Sometimes, it’s impossible to tell who is wrong. Plus, it is hard to leave someone with many bonds in between. However, one should always feel free to leave someone if one thinks that he/she/they can’t love themselves and can’t express their true self anymore. The message behind this is that individuals must develop self-love and self-respect. I want to encourage everyone to love and respect themselves before loving others.

During shooting, I learned that filming a complete video is ambiguous. It took a lot of time, effort, and energy. It is not what it seems like: turning on the camera and filming whatever you want. Taking and moving many types of equipment to varies settings and reshooting bad shoots made me have much more respect toward filmmakers. The pressure and stress I have made me want to make it perfect, but I realized that nothing could ever be perfect.
I look forward to devoting my passion for filmmaking more in the future.
