I decided to hold my first ASL kids lesson today. I wanted to start next week but Mirella, the student in the video, was very interested in ASL and was eager to learn. Therefore I decided that I may as well start now and teach her as my first student.
First of all, I prepared by making a lesson plan, preparing what I was going to say (all of the information I was going to give to the student) and printing out a alphabet colouring sheet.
Before the lesson, I informed her mother of what was going to happen during the lesson and also asked for her permission to film.
By the first lesson the 8 year old student knew how to sign the letter “A” and also Some background information on ASL itself.
After wrapping up the lesson, I asked the student for some feedback. She said that she really enjoyed the lesson, she thought it was fun and was also excited that I included drawing as a principal activity.
After the lesson, I proceeded to put together the video, add music and subtitles. I believe that the subtitles was a good ethical decision that I made as it could help people that are hard of hearing follow along with the lesson.
Lastly, I runed the video by the child’s parents and then finally uploaded it to managebac.
I really enjoyed the lesson as it was fun, creative and also allowed me to share my knowledge with Mirella. Additionally, having a student that was eager to learn was also very inspiring. I just can’t wait for the next lesson.
