In Canada, international students are far away from family and friends, and spending money in nightclubs has become a common way of life for international students. In nightclubs, the alcohol, the lights, and loud music together make them feel high in spirit and excited mood. But the spirit of their excited mood or state of being excited fades after they leave the club and they realize that these types of feelings are only temporary and short-lived. When they wake up the next day, all these high and excited feelings propelled artificially from the experiences from being in a nightclub disappears and when reality sets in, the real back-to-earth real-life feelings of depression and emptiness sets in. The whole ‘ups and downs’ from high to low, happy to sad experiences of seeking temporary relief and happiness, and to some extent, trying escape from reality only for a moment can be best expressed to me, much like a balloon gaining momentum of blossoming full of hope and joy but only to be let down or blown up so quickly because the truth is people are so fragile and vulnerable like a balloon being slowly blown up with nothing inside just like air in an empty space within them. The extremely high and happy moods suddenly get taken away and disappear like thin air. This is unfortunately sad but true. I guess we all need to escape from reality.
