Dream was initially conceived and created while Djofray Makumbu was studying at Goldsmiths. After a challenging journey punctuated by obstacles his arrival at university, an achievement he had aspired and worked towards for many years, felt almost surreal. The piece was the focal point of his 2017 degree show and resulted in Djofray being awarded the Goldsmiths Alumno/SPACE Studio bursary award.
“Dream was inspired by being at Goldsmiths because I felt like I was dreaming and I was going to wake up.”
The original iteration of the piece featured found stock audio however his residency with Guest Projects Digital afforded Djofray the time to rework Dream and compose his own soundscape for it. This in turn inadvertently lead to further explorations into future sonic and performance works opening up a new field within his practice.
“It features my own vocals with sounds from different instruments created using a mini keyboard. My brother is a musician and when I go to the studio with him I like observing and learning from the producers there then going online to research and learn from tutorials. I’m so inspired by my friend Tolu Shorts, I love how he makes sound and music, he’s a genius.”
This is the first time the new version of Dream has been shown. It will be available to view on the Guest Projects Digital website until 30th October 2021.
