International Coastal Cleanup Day, filmed impromptu at La Tortuga, Venezuela, 2017.

This little film was completely unplanned. The day after we arrived to La Tortuga was the International Coastal Cleanup Day, which is held every 3rd Saturday of September. I had my camera equipment with me so I decided to film the event as it happened. I did a mini interview with Zlatka, who, with breeze gave a perfectly fluent response whilst having been put on the spot and who was, I must say, only 21 at the time. Big thanks to Manuel for chipping in with so many important points about the rubbish we found on this isolated virgin island, a lot of it carried there by marine currents form other locations in the Caribbean Sea. At first sight the beach seemed pretty clean but when we started to have a closer look we found plastic everywhere.

As my camera fainted in the heat after about an hour of filming, I went for a second round with them. After seeing how much we gathered and how much was still on the ground, I was shocked to hear Zlatka say that this is the cleanest beach in Venezuela, the rest are not as clean. There are still no recycling laws in place in the country.

Este pequeño video fue completamente imprevisto. El dí­a después de nuestra llegada a La Tortuga fue el Día Internacional de Limpieza de Playas, que se celebra el tercer sábado de septiembre. Tení­a mi equipo de cámara conmigo, así­ que decidí­ filmar el evento tal como sucedió. Hice una mini entrevista con Zlatka, quien, con brisa, dio una respuesta perfectamente fluida mientras estaba en el lugar y que tení­a, debo decir, solo 21 en ese momento. Muchas gracias a Manuel por contribuir con tantos puntos importantes sobre la basura que encontramos en esta aislada isla virgen, mucha de ella llevada allí­ por las corrientes marinas desde otros lugares del Mar Caribe. A primera vista la playa parecí­a bastante limpia pero cuando empezamos a mirar más de cerca encontramos plástico por todas partes.

Como mi cámara se apagó por el calor después de aproximadamente una hora de filmación, fui a una segunda ronda con ellos. Después de ver cuánto recolectamos y cuánto quedaba en el suelo, fue impactante escuchar a Zlatka decir que esta es la playa más limpia de Venezuela, el resto está más sucio. Todavía no existen leyes de reciclaje en el país.
