David Wall, singer

David Wall is a Toronto-based composer and singer. He has written scores for a long list of film, television, and experimental projects, working with collaborators such as Bruce Mau Design, Naomi Klein and Alan Zweig. His career as a singer has included fronting bands with funny names, like The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir and The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band. He has written a large catalogue of songs in many genres including a #1 song for rock band Big Sugar. More recently he has studied Cantorial and traditional Yiddish music and has worked extensively with pianist Marilyn Lerner. David lives in Toronto with his wife, Kyo Maclear and two boys, Yoshi, and Mika.

Exhilarating jazz pianist/improviser Marilyn Lerner has performed to acclaim internationally, from her native Montreal to Havana, from Jerusalem to Amsterdam and the Ukraine.

A prolific artist, Lerner’s work spans the worlds of jazz, creative improvisation, and klezmer.

Along with her innovative solo piano work, Lerner has toured with the Queen Mab Trio (with Lori Freedman and Ig Henneman), the Ig Henneman Sextet across Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Lerner has appeared with with Tito Puente, Gerry Hemingway, and Steve Lacy. She currently performs with her two trios, the Ugly Beauties (Matt Brubeck-cello, Nick Fraser- drums) and in the New York based ensemble with drummer Lou Grassi and bassist Ken Filiano.

Marilyn is active in Jewish music scene, teaching and conducting master classes at KlezKanada, Weimar and Yiddish New York as well as composing and arranging and directing for the annual Dreaming In Yiddish concert in memory of the great Yiddish singer Adrienne Cooper. She also performs with Frank London, Alicia Svigals, Susan Watts, and other luminaries of the revival klezmer scene.

Lerner creates projects that bridge classical music and improvisation, her Mad Satie Trio (David Occipinti, Andrew Downing), and most recently Le Trace de Satyr which reimagines works of french composers (Patricia O’Callahan, Andrew Dowing). Other current projects include Brass Knuckle Sandwich, an improvising duo with trumpeter Nicole Rampersaud, BREM, with Brodie West, Evan Cartwright and Reg Schwager, Peter Johnston’s See Through Quartet with Karen Ng and Nick Fraser.

Lerner accompanies silent film in Toronto for: the Silent Revue series, the Toronto Silent Film Festival and at the Bell Lightbox. For over four years she has been touring in Canada, the US and Europe with violinist composer Alicia Svigals score for the 1918 silent film the Yellow Ticket.

In addition to her music work, Lerner trained as a psychotherapist and then psychoanalyst and has been in private practise in Toronto, Ontario since 2007.
