This video is a compilation of all of our different Guild Wars 2 player character races (and genders for Human, Norn, and Sylvari) sitting on an invisible chair, to show off the first set of player character animations I ever did: "Chairsitions"! I think you'll spot a few familiar faces in there ;)

The GW2 sitting mechanic launched in April of 2018 - two months after I started as an intern. I noticed the lack of transition from standing to sitting and, being an animator, was incredibly bothered by this. So in-between assignments, I asked - and was granted permission - to work on these "chairsition" animations. It was the first time I had to animate the same movement across many different characters with different personalities and body types, and playing up those unique qualities in various ways - some subtle, some very much not so - was a great challenge.

My favorite, of course, is the Asura. At first I was afraid to make them too bouncy, but our Animation Lead, Chuck Jackman, told me to squash and stretch to my heart's content because we could always pull them back later. The end result strikes a good balance between the sort of playfulness I wanted and the realism of GW2.

Now that I'm on our Cinematics team, I don't have the opportunity to create as many player character animation sets, but I hope I can do something like this again someday, because I had a ton of fun and learned a lot.
