Bee Song by composer Robert Hoehn was inspired by the daily life of a bumblebee colony. While the score was originally made for the sound sculpture Resonant Nest by Hoehn and Jessica Rath, a new arrangement will be sung live at Descanso Gardens by the Bob Cole Conservatory Chamber Choir from California State University, Long Beach this Saturday, March 7.
Steering away from a chaotic portrait of bees, Hoehn created a non-dramatic and well-organized nest using minimalist compositional techniques—no lyrics, only rhythm, pitch and timbre. Each of six sections of the score reflect different moods as influenced by time, temperature, and wind. In Cold Huddle, bees rub together to create heat during the cold before sunrise, which is described musically by interlacing rhythmic patterns rolling over each other. And in Languid Wander, bees slowly emerge to replenish before major foraging, a score that is broadly harmonious and slow moving, like most creatures waking up.
