. The middle section of Frédéric Chopin’s
Piano Concerto Number One, Opus Eleven,
in E minor, the Larghetto Romanze between
the Maestoso Allegro and the Vivace Rondo
seems to me to leisurely wander about. It
wander as my paintings do~ a little stroll for
my imagination. Larghetto is slower than an
andante brisk walk, but not as slow as window
shopping (largo). So, this six minute video
wanders through fifty of my paintings at a
leisurely pace.
Chopin’s romantic Concerto was composed
in 1830. The live performance here was
played by the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra
in Warsaw, Poland, with the virtuoso pianist
Martha Argerich in 2010. The entire forty

The pianist, Martha Argerich, was born in
Buenos Aires. The child prodigy was a most
precocious child. She began kindergarten
at two years and eight months and four
months later, at the age of three, she started
playing the piano with lyricism and feeling.
She gave her debut concert in at age eight.
She won the International Chopin Piano
Competition in 1965. Wow!
How cool is it that the genius Chopin’s
Concerto should be played by an 80 year old
former child prodigy in Chopin’s native
Poland?! The 1830 premier of Piano
Concerto was at Warsaw’s National Theater
with twenty year old Fred playing.
Chopin’s Piano Concerto Number One
has the orchestra in a supporting role just
adding atmosphere to the piano. Chopin
based the piano part on the decorative
artistic details of Belcanto singing in
Italian operas. There is also a hint of
Polish traditional romantic melodies.
Martha Argerich has performed this
Concerto many times. Each time, with
her virtuosity, artistic temperament, and
spontaneity she has discovered new
facets of the work. Again, WOW!
