C(H)ŒURS
Teatro Real Madrid / les ballets C de la B
Alain Platel

world première: 12 March 2012, Teatro Real (Madrid)

When opera director Gerard Mortier asked Alain Platel to create a Verdi project, the Ghent choreographer immediately got to work with the famous choral scenes from Verdi’s operas. Later on he added pieces of music from Richard Wagner’s works. For years, the tension be-tween the group and the individual have been the central theme in Platel’s performances which are popular, anarchistic, eclectic and committed. In C(H)ŒURS, so far his biggest pro-ject, he examines –together with his dancers and the Teatro Real choir – how ‘dangerously beautiful’ a group can be. What is the relation between the progressive 19th-century national-ism of Verdi and Wagner and the increasing current tendency of nations to cut themselves off ? Love, in opera so typically idealized, what role does it play in a crowd? Just like Jonathan Littell in his novel the Kindly Ones, Platel questions/investigates the responsibility of the individ-ual in the group. But the most important question remains how 21st century spectators deal with the irresistible emotionality coming from Wagner’s and Verdi’s choruses.
