"Choreographing for Against Shadows felt like writing an emboldened speech for an activistʼs rally. Hip Hop already speaks to confidence, sexuality, and aggression, so when asked to address racial and gender discrimination, the movement came easily. I decided to play on two motifs: being tough, playing coy. I valued the opportunity to collaborate with female POC peers.
The day of filming was an energizing experience. We were located on a busy alley in downtown San Francisco during the 2017 Womenʼs March. The combination of hearing chants in distant streets and M.I.A. blasting from the car as we rehearsed fueled us with the exact energy needed."
