Atieh Sohrabi is an Iranian illustrator and artist based in New York City. Atieh's books have been included in various museum exhibitions around the world, including the Biennale of Illustrations, Bratislava (2003, 2009, 2015); Biennale of Illustration Golden Pen, Belgrade (2005, 2007, 2009); The 24 BIB Exhibition at Hiratsuka Art Museum; Urawa Art Museum, Japan (2014), Illustrators 59 at Society of Illustrators, New York City (2016), and many others. In 2019, she was part of a group exhibition at White Wall Space Gallery and one of her art pieces was acquired by LACMA.
Atieh’s new series of paintings are based on female figures that do not follow the standards set by society. Appreciating different body types requires a deep understanding that an individual’s appearance does not reflect their character or self-worth. Looking at the women around her, Atieh presents these figures in more realistic shapes that are different from society’s expectations. She covers these bodies with patterns influenced by Persian traditional patterns. Atieh sees a connection between these women and a few Iranian singers of the previous generation. She attempts to represent these artists’ fearless attitudes despite the society’s judgments through using graphic motion techniques and adding pop music to her illustrations.
