I accompanied the Nordic researchers and entrepreneurs of ARCTISEN* to Greenland for a week, early Dec. 2019. I interviewed local tourism entrepreneurs and filmed our experiences as part of the benchmarking trip. From these materials, I edited short videos for the social media accounts of ARCTISEN.
Visit to Greenland: Sisimiut
We were warmly welcomed by various Greenlandic tourism entrepreneurs at Turisme Stormødet (Tourism summit). We learned about regional activities and community guidelines with Jesper Schrøder from Arctic Circle Business, and we were inspired by the diversity and quality of tourism initiatives such as Dogsledge Taxi. We also heard the stories of the Sami reindeer herders Laila Inga from Inga Sami Siida, and Ailu Utsi from Davvi Siida, who gifted us with his joik several times during the trip. The next day Sanni Orasmaa from SoundbyNature took us on a outdoor adventure and invited us to tune in with nature. Our visit in Sisimiut ended with a spontaneous musical collaboration between Greenlandic DJing and traditional Sami song.

*ARCTISEN - Culturally Sensitive Tourism in the Arctic
The project ‘Culturally Sensitive Tourism in the Arctic’ – ARCTISEN – develops a support system for start-ups and existing small and medium-sized enterprises offering innovative tourism products and services. Across the Arctic, there is a pressing demand for new tourism products and services that draw on the rich natural and cultural resources of the region. Simultaneously, limited knowledge of indigenous and other local cultures in Northern communities calls for more open and sensitive dialogue among different tourism actors.
