The exhibit brings to life a portfolio of illustrated Greek costumes that are part of the Powerhouse Museum’s collection. This interactive experience focuses on the wearable nature of clothing to bring the portfolio to life in order to immerse the user in the specific regions in Greece where the costumes are from. After viewing the portfolio in the museum the audience is provided with an opportunity to experience and interact with the portfolio in a virtual environment. By putting on VR goggles the user is able to view the object and select a specific costume to explore. They are then transported to the costumes region to learn about Greek culture and stories whilst wearing the costume. The user is taken to a Google Street View map of the location where they can explore the region and hear different cultural stories. A body scanner tracks their movements to allow them to move around in the virtual space by using their arms. When the user arrives in a new region and explores different areas they hear related information on Greek culture and the region. The interactive experience is specifically targeted towards people from different contexts who like to travel and are interested in different cultures. But the experience would also be valuable to people with Greek heritage who want to learn more about their culture. The proposed concept provides a greater engagement and exploration of the object in relation to the cultural and geographical context creating a long lasting impact on the audience.
This design is part of the student learning experience in 87009 or 87445 VC Design Studio: Visualising Experience Spring 2021 in the Faculty of Design Architecture and Built Environment (DAB) University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and is not a professional design outcome. This project was developed under the guidance of studio leaders and demonstrators. As a response to a notional assessment brief, it is not directly connected to the Powerhouse Museum.
