Cuba Skate, a Washington, D.C. based non-profit organization, is excited to announce its upcoming Ten Year Anniversary Symposium and the first ever Havana Skate Festival. The organization supports the evolution of skateboarding in Cuba, develops local communities and international connections, and empowers youth through sport.

The festival will take place on April 3-5, 2020 in Havana, Cuba. This three day celebration will feature various workshops with internationally renowned athletes, skateboarding demos and clinics, speaking panels of renowned cultural experts, photography and art exhibitions, and music performances.

Estudio 50, Fabrica de Arte Cubano and Galeria Taller Gorria will serve as our hosts and partners on the ground, providing access to trendy and hip venues and socially conscious communities. The weekend’s events will convene an eclectic mix of change-makers, specifically skateboarders, artists, musicians, builders, and photographers. The prevalent role played by art and music, and the focus on gender and youth empowerment in skateboard culture, provide a real example of the social good created by the sport. A fundamental goal of the festival and of Cuba Skate is to highlight the community benefits that are brought about by skateboarding.

The events will showcase Cuba’s unique role in the global skateboarding community. Despite shortcomings in the formal skateboarding infrastructure—no shops, skateparks or industry—Cuba is one of the most dynamic and emerging skateboarding communities in the world. Their ability to continue to skate, create, and innovate; whether it be in their skateboarding, repurposing of materials, or in the creation of skateparks, harkens back to an era in which the only motivation to pick up a skateboard was for the love and passion of the sport.
