An anti-war folk song about the 1946 student protests in response to the rape of a Beijing University student by U.S. soldiers and against U.S. military intervention in the pre-1949 civil war in China.
lyrics
(chorus)
At Beijing University in 1946
U.S. soldiers raped a woman
But Chinese students did protest.
(verses)
Forty-five divisions
Equipped by the USA
Started a Chinese civil war
And millions of peasants were slain.
150,000 soldiers
Trained by the USA
And higher numbers brought to the front
By U.S. warships and planes. (chorus)
90,000 U.S. marines
Landed on China's shores
Stationed in China's cities
They protected the big landlords.
They marched around Shanghai
And guarded Red lines in China's north
And in December 1946
Raped a Beijing student. (chorus)
Half a million students
All walked out of class
And many Chinese cities
Were filled with student protests.
"U.S. Out Of China!!"
They chanted in the streets
And for a month they demonstrated
And called for Chiang Kai-Shek's defeat. (chorus)
Many years have passed
Since the rape at Beijing U.
But U.S. troops still march
In countries where Yankees rule.
And one Spring day in Belgrade
U.S. troops bombed an embassy
So Chinese students again did march
On the streets of Chinese cities. (chorus)
