I chose to play along with Billy Joel’s recording of his own (1977) composition, “She’s Always a Woman”.

It was originally released on his Album, “The Stranger” that same year. It reached #17 in the US Charts in 1977. It made #53 in the UK in 1986. It was released as a double sided single with “Just the way you are”, when it re-entered the UK charts and reached #29.

It’s a love song about a modern woman, with whom the singer has fallen totally in love, to the extent falling for her endearing quirks as well as her flaws. It was said that Billy Joel wrote it in tribute to his Wife, who helped him to successfully sort out his financial affairs and undertook his management as an Artist.

The song has an unusual 6/8 time signature. I played along with a Bass line of my own creation.

I chose to play along on my (2014) Fender American Standard Precision 4 string fretted Bass. I have fitted it with Thomastik-Infeld #JF344 flat wound Nickel covered strings and a custom Pickup, hand wound in the USA by Jason Lollar. More recently, I have added Titanium Bridge Saddles, which have further lowered and improved the playing action and are reputed to transfer sound better.

This is a “Passive” only Bass, with no onboard preamp. I initially set the Volume control on this Bass at 100% and the retro fitted “Stellartone – 11 position Tone Styler” Passive Tone Control Pot around 45%. I set the controls on my Bergantino B|AMP flat.

I recorded this via an XLR lead from the output on the rear of my Bergantino B|AMP, direct into the XLR Input Socket on the front panel of my Focusrite Clarett 4 Pre USB Audio Input box, which is connected to my Intel i7 powered MS Windows 10 PC.

This was, yet again, a one shot ‘take’. I am pleased with the tone and quality of the sound. That was what I wanted to achieve. The only sound effect is driven by my fingers.

The Audio track was recorded direct on Ableton Live 11 Lite recording software. As this track is intended as a critique piece for the Bass, I have intentionally made that instrument louder on this video than I would play it if backing another musician.

The Video was contemporaneously captured, via my Canon EOS M50 mirrorless camera, initially to an internal memory card, from which I subsequently downloaded it to my PC.

From there, it was It was imported direct to Corel Pinnacle Studio Video Software, version 21.5. I turned off the Audio track on the original video, captured via the microphone in my camera. The higher quality Audio track was subsequently added and synchronised with the video footage.

I saved the composite video file and exported it in 1080 dpi HD Format. If the quality is too high for slower Internet downloads, you can change the quality to a lower dpi, via the settings menu, which is depicted as a small Cog logo, in the bottom right corner of the hosted video, although it should do that automatically for you.
