This piece is
The scene starts with the cook rushing out of his kitchen on a bike to chase the rat who stole his documents. He stops at the end of the street, looking for him. The strings and woodwinds then play a few notes that give suspense, followed by the flute answering with a tritone. As he locates the rat, the ensemble plays similar notes with different dynamics, which gives more intensity and “fear” to the piece. The strings then slide up, and the snare roll marks the start of the chase. As the cook runs after the rat, the violins play the main melody, and the violoncello and viola are playing dark, tremolo strings to give more of an anxiety feel to the chase. As two cars crash, the brass and woodwinds brutally hit us with staccato notes. When the cook gets closer to the rat, the music gradually goes down which causes the audience to be mentally prepared for the fall of the cook from the stairs. We then have an orchestral tutti which marks the hit points as he hurts the ground while falling. The music stops, we look at the rat holding the papers, then one of the them flies away. The chasing music continues with a slightly different theme. The music then gets stronger with a crescendo, it is a preparation for the jump in which the rat is about to do. The harpsichord in this part gives us more of the French/Paris mood. As he jumps, the music stops, and there is another orchestral tutti; first as he jumps, as he catches the papers, and then after he lands on a boat. We’re then questioning whether the chase is going to continue or not. The angry cook jumps back on the boat; hence the chase continues, with another slightly different theme. As the chase goes on, we have a modulation happening which adds more intensity to the music and the scene, then a hit point as the rat jumps on the second boat followed by another modulation and other hit points when the cook jumps and slips. We then get very dissonant and fast musical motives that gradually go up as the cook follows the rat, to make the scene have more of an anxious and stressful vibe since the cook is about the get the rat. The rat then jumps into the air; the music stops, and while he’s flying, there is more of a flowing and dreamy vibe to the music. It then gets more intense as there is a crescendo happening whilst we see the cook

who’s about to jump, since there is still a chance that he’s going to land on the third boat and chase the rat again. However, the moment he jumps, there is a very comedic vibe to the music which makes his jump “ridiculous”, there is one drum hit as he jumps, a few piccolo rips while he’s in the air, and one orchestral hit as he falls in the water right next to the couple who does not seem to realize. We can then see the rat running away with the papers while the cook is shamelessly and angrily looking at him.
The meter in this piece often varies from 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4 in order to stay in time with the hit points, which are very important due to the fact that it is an animation scene. The mood is a very comedic one, as the whole point of the scene is an angry cook chasing a rat (and failing).
