This was a fun and intriguing project to work on. Not only did it give me an excuse to use After Effects (I admittedly hardly ever use it, since Premier does everything I need it to do), but it also helped me learn about some of the more advanced animation and graphical editing techniques of both AE and Illustrator. I learned how to make curves and create the illusion of conjoined parts in Illustrator, and I learned how to pose using puppet joints and import Illustrator projects in After Effects. The Illustrator importing in particular will be useful in the future, and it demonstrated how integral all of Adobe’s software was with each other, being able to convert an ai file into an animatable composition.
Another aspect I enjoyed about creating this project was seeing it evolve in my head. My original plan was to do something more ambitious, with more detailed assets and animations, and a more complex pan-out from the inside of a house to the outside, but I ended up dropping the idea early on due to time constraints. I then changed the narrative into one with a mixture of seriousness and comedy, with the comedy coming from the slapstick nature of a person’s house being randomly destroyed, and the seriousness coming from the message it is conveying, that being the high rate of annual deforestation. In the end, while the final result isn’t exactly what I had imagined initially, it still came out very well, and I’m proud of the outcome.
