A simple way we can break away from predictable pentatonic sequences is by playing different note groupings to displace things a little.
In this lesson we will look at 5 note patterns but still group them rhythmically as semiquavers.
We have aimed for a more straight ahead rock approach for this lesson influenced by Slash, Zakk Wylde and Blues Saraceno.
Try vary the lick; start it on the off beat, only play a fraction of the sequence etc. be creative.
Players such as Eric Johnson, Shawn lane and many other have used these odd grouping ideas to great effect.
This lesson is aimed at rock guitarists wanting to mix things up a little yet still maintain a rock/blues vibe.
Listeners will likely have no idea what your doing but it will sound cool anyway. :)
Also as we are playing with a high gain setting, slight palm muting will be required throughout to keep things tight.
Lick 1
B minor Pentatonic shape 1 in a descending 5 note sequence played as semiquavers. Pay attention to the picking directions outlined on music as we have to incorporate economy picking or 1 downwards sweep mixed with our standard alternate picking.
Lick 2
B minor Pentatonic position 3 grouped in a similar way this time ascending. Note how we've added our blues note in at the top to keep things evenly sequenced.
Lesson Content. Ascending the lick is played with strict alternate picking but pick however feels comfortable.
Part 1 - Lick 1 Slow
Part 2 - Lick 2 Slow
