The Japanese luxury sedan market is crowded and competitive in Japan, and Nissan built a timeless design in the form of the Y32. This 1991 Gloria ticked all the boxes when new, utilizing a stout front-engine rear-drive platform, the elegant proportions, simple styling, and clean cabin with tons of power amenities. Offered with only 49K verified miles, and finished in an understated, yet upscale Blue Lapis (BK8) the body is in good shape other than some light clear coat fading, and some light dings and chips from normal use. The OEM BBS alloys wheels and privacy tint complete the aesthetic, making the statement that you can certainly drive something unique without having to make a spectacle of it.

The Gloria sported a clean, modern design for the interior. Plenty of power equipment is standard including digital climate control, powered seats, folding mirrors, and one-touch driver window. The dash is in good shape and is devoid of any cracks, holes, or discoloration. Atop the center is a classy analog clock, and to the right of the steering wheel, a recessed control panel and cardholder. The matching door cards and headliner are in above average shape compared to our average Gloria, and a rare sunroof was optioned in this example. Not only does it retract for better ventilation, but it also tilts up if you'd like to enjoy a slight, cooling breeze. The dark blue upholstery is soft to the touch and comfortable on long cruises. The backbench, which seats three, is in equally good condition as the front buckets. Devoid of any major rips or stains, they have lasted the test of time! This isn't much of a surprise, as the old owners kept the OEM carpet floor mats to protect the gray carpet underneath. They are included in the sale, and if you open up the glove box, you'll even find the factory manuals with some service info. The audio system works properly and pipes tunes through the front and rear speakers. The quality is still decent after all these years, a testament to how Nissan built the car itself. That's not to say the interior is perfect, as the climate control vents on the dash are slightly distressed, the ashtray won't rescind, and the power locks are intermittent. All in all, for a nearly thirty-year-old ride, it is quite impressive how nice this one is.

The underpinnings of the Gloria are simple and straightforward. Nissan's reliable, and compact VG30DET was chosen to power most of these sedans. The 3.0L engine fires up with a twist of a key and befits from fresh semi-synthetic oil service to keep it happy. VG's are easy to work on and parts are readily available and inexpensive. The turbocharged version of the engine, used in this example, was optional and highly desired. Power is sent rearward through an automatic transmission. Shifts are smooth, and the slushbox operates as it should. Its geared for US highway cruising, and mates up nicely to the engine's powerband. Acceleration is brisk and there isn't much lag to speak of, which makes daily driving more fun. Midrange torque is one of the strong suits of this motor and off the line there is a noticeably more thrust available over the N/A version. The steering is power-assisted and light and the front pads and rotors have been replaced with new ones, and the midsize sedan brakes impressively well for its size. The factory dampers do a nice job insulating the cabin from the road surface, and with plenty of ground clearance, large and small potholes are shrugged off by the Gloria. As a part of our vehicle inspection, a new left rear HICAS arm was replaced to improve the feel of this four-door. The stunning factory BBS wheels are all wrapped in new all-season rubber, mounted and balanced by one of our trained technicians. They ensure everyone's safety in all weather conditions, and quite down the ride even more.

As a do-it-all sedan, the Y32 won't disappoint. At current market pricing, its astounding what you get for your money. With room for five, reliable mechanicals, unique styling, and a silky ride it is easy to see why this is a Japanese Classic.
