SYNOPSIS EN
During wintertime, the mountains follow the beat of the spirit of Carnival. This season of disarray, of a “world up-side-down,” is a reflection of our primitive notions of celebration, bound up as they are in symbolic thought and in the vital rhythms of nature.
The Masquerade Mountains travels to the Pyrenees to explore the Carnival rituals that have survived in many mountain villages to this day. It is a journey through various valleys in Aragon, Navarre, Andorra, the French Basque Country, and the Roussillon region of the Eastern French Pyrenees.
The documentary is a cross between a travelogue, an eye-witness report, and an anthropological film. Carnival celebrations serve as a nexus connecting different territories. This journey to the Pyrenees allows us to compare the characters, symbols, aesthetics, music, and dances that prevail in various winter festivals, and we do so in multiple languages: Castillian, French, Euskera (Basque), and Catalan.
SINOPSIS ES
Durante el invierno, en la montaña, late el espíritu del carnaval, un tiempo de desorden, un “mundo al revés”, reflejo de una concepción primitiva de la fiesta, ligada a un pensamiento simbólico y a los ritmos vitales de la naturaleza.
La Montaña enmascara viaja al encuentro de aquellos rituales que, durante el tiempo de carnaval, perviven en muchos pueblos de la cordillera pirenaica. Recorre distintos valles de Aragón, Navarra, Andorra, el País Vasco francés y la región del Rosellón, en los Pirineos Orientales franceses.
El documental se mueve entre el relato de viaje, el testimonial y el antropológico. La celebración del carnaval actúa como nexo entre territorios. Aparecen unos Pirineos que permiten comparar personajes, símbolos, estéticas, músicas y danzas de las diferentes fiestas de invierno; y hacerlo en las diversas lenguas: Castellano, Francés, Euskera y Catalán.
