An artistic sensitive man (Leslie Howard) finds himself attracted to a cold and unfeeling waitress (Bette Davis in a breakthrough role and her first Oscar nomination) who may ultimately destroy them both. Based on the 1915 novel by W. Somerset Maugham, it is one of over 40 film adaptions of his writings. John Cromwell directs, and Max Steiner’s perfectly integrated music was an early standard of film scores.
