The Pink Elephant embodies cognitive distortions, a manifestation of the relentless imagination opposed to tangible reality, a friendly reminder that thoughts are not facts.
Synopsis:
I was once told that there was a pink and purple elephant sitting next to me, I looked - the seat was empty. In this interaction, I learnt that thoughts are not facts, that cognitive distortions materialise only in the mind. Pink Elephant – an aesthetically surrealist, symbolic experience of cognitive distortions – is made up of three components; thoughts, reality and the in between. Thoughts are represented by unintelligibly grey images, overlayed extreme-closeups – creating a sense of chaos. Filming on an iPhone 7, I will advantage the physically small lens that can be pushed against objects to create these closeups. This chaos is intercut by reality – a human face with a warm colour palette. Using a smartphone to film Pink Elephant also intends to create an intimate space for a vulnerable and naturalistic performance from the subject by avoiding intimidating equipment. Finally, the pink elephant – though representing challenging mental patterns – is a friend to the audience and reality, a reminder that the cognitive distortions materialise dreamlike only in the mind. A poetic quality is established in the audio as whispered thoughts representing the unconscious mind combine with flute. Tension will escalate in Pink Elephant until the unintelligible grey images and pink elephant dissipate at the conclusion of the film, evoking a sense of independence for the human subject. This conclusive state of relief is not manifested by the visual disappearance of the pink elephant but rather, as there no longer exists a reliance on this metaphor to challenge cognitive distortions.
