NEVER STOP DOING WHAT YOU LOVE
March 4, 2017, my wife woke me up with excitement saying she had a surprise for me.
She said pack your camera gear as she handed me some paperwork.
As I looked at the papers, I saw that she signed me up for an exclusive photographers’ event to view the Piedras Blancas Light Station in San Simeon California.
Immediately my heart dropped but I tried not to show it in my face because I could see she was so excited.
I said I’m not a photographer I make family videos
She said it will be fun as she pushed me out the door
After a quick stop at Best Buy to buy a cheap tripod I was on my way, the 45-minute drive up Highway 1 was beautiful. I got to the gate of the Piedras Blancas Light Station and was greeted by a docent that let me in.
Upon arriving I could tell this was a serious photographer’s event.
I parked and sat there trying to come up with an excuse not to get out of the car and drive back home. Knowing my wife would be sad and I would probably kick myself I gathered up the courage to get out of the car and grab my camera gear which consisted of a Canon G7X that I had only used for videos, a gimbal that I didn’t know how to use, an iPhone 6 & a brand new tripod in the box.
Peeking out of the corner of my eye I could see the other photographers setting up their expensive cameras that were about 10 times the size of mine.
I took a deep breath grabbed my little camera and tripod and set out for a day of learning from the ground up.
I kept to myself most of the day, trying to stay in the areas where other photographers weren't.
The time went fairly quick, I did mostly video and a few photos throughout the day.
I got a few interesting looks from people and a comment from a guy that asked me “what are you doing”
But then came the moment of truth
I could see that everyone was strategically lining up out in the field facing the lighthouse
It was SUNSET!
Again I took a deep breath and made my way over to the group realizing there were no more spots
What to do? Do I just leave now? I could just see my wife asking “show me the sunset photos” ahh “I don’t have any”
I asked 2 locally famous photographers if they would mind if I take a few shots while they waited for the magic moment, they smirked to each other and said sure that’s fine (thanks Luke).
I took the SHOT...
The day was finally over, I walked back to my car wondering if any of my photos and videos were useable.
Well, here is the VIDEO.
2 YEARS LATER in December of 2019, I was pleasantly surprised by an email from a photo contest that I had entered months earlier. (my wife made me enter)
My photo of the Piedras Blancas Light Station was chosen for the cover of the San Luis Obispo County Emergency Planning Calendar for 2020
