We would like for you to consider Spectrum News 1’s Nic Cha Kim for the National Arts & Entertainment “Television Journalist of the Year.”
As the senior multimedia journalist covering arts and culture on Spectrum News 1’s morning, afternoon, and evening shows, Nic Cha Kim provided Southern Californian television viewers with over 100 stories from July 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021.
COVID-19 wreaked havoc on Los Angeles artist communities. As museums, art galleries, theatres, music venues, and arts organizations were forced to shut down - artists, curators, and arts administrators had to reprioritize their work and mission in order to survive. Nic’s multimedia coverage proved the resilience of these artist communities and showed their humanity, dedication and importance to the Los Angeles landscape.
As a multimedia journalist (MMJ) working without an assignment desk, Nic is responsible for integrating into artist communities, finding stories and subjects, and producing them from start to finish. As an MMJ, Nic not only shoots all his own stories, he also mixes audio, edits video, writes all his stories, tracks voice-overs, reports live from the field, and works with the producers back at the station to ensure his stories get broadcast on air.
Nic’s reports range from how COVID-19 affected the creative economy, the ways artists responded to the pandemic, new artworks inspired by the current climate, and the numerous recovery efforts by the many municipalities that make up Los Angeles County.
Nic’s work spotlighted museums like The Broad and The Getty, performing arts centers like The Music Center and Long Beach Opera, art galleries like Rele and SoLA Contemporary, events like the LA Design Festival and STEM Science Festival, and nonprofit arts organizations like Self-Help Graphics and The Watts Towers. He also highlighted notable artists like Raina Lee, Andy Moses, Narsiso Martinez, Luke Cheuh, and Alison Saar.
Also passionate about covering issues of diversity in entertainment, Nic also covered the releases of Mulan, Cobra Kai and the Oscar-winning film Minari as well as reported on diversity in the video game industry, public radio, STEM, and arts institutions like the UCLA Film & Television Archives.
Nic’s dedication to covering arts and culture has consistently informed SoCal viewers on the importance of arts and the need for culture in our everyday lives.
The provided reel includes clips from a number of Nic’s stories throughout the air as well as the following complete packages: CARES For Arts, Studio Visit: Alison Saar, Fruit Cart Art, Studio Visit: Raina Lee.
