A screen recording of artist led project digitalocean.manamoana.co.nz/.

Mana Moana Digital Ocean brings together more than 20 leading Māori and Pacifica artists from across Aotearoa for an online collection of multimedia and video art – all housed over an immersive waterscape rendered in 3D. Art and technology weave together in eight new collaborative works ranging from video art, to VR /360 film and 3D digital sculpture. The result is an innovative exhibition inspired by Covid-19 speaking to our relationships with water and the need for collective action to ensure its survival.

These digital art works offer a compelling narrative about manaakitanga (hospitality) and whanaungatanga (relationships) to inspire positive change for people and the planet alike. In doing so, themes of well-being, balance and healing are forefronted in a number of the works. Curators reached out to multimedia creatives to produce works that pushed the boundaries of the medium while also staying true to the kaupapa of the project.

Artists involved in Mana Moana Volume 2 include visual artists, dancers, musicians, filmmakers and poets, with new works featuring Dr Karlo Mila, Dr Johnson Witehira, Louise Poitiki-Bryant, Michael Tuffery, Warren Maxwell, Horomona Horo, Kura Puke, Stuart Foster, Kurt Komene, Kereama Taepa, Tina Ngata, Terri Ripeka Crawford, Laughton Kora, Regan Balzer, Rob Thorne, Cathy Livermore and Jess Feast.

About MANA MOANA
Mana Moana, curated and conceived by Rachael Rakena and Mike Bridgman and produced by arts production company Storybox, brings together leading interdisciplinary Māori and Pacific artists to collaborate on multimedia and moving image artworks exploring our relationships with the ocean, climate change and highlights indigenous knowledge and stories. The inaugural Mana Moana project in 2019 presented five audio-visual works on a water screen at Whairepo Lagoon in Wellington as part of Matariki celebrations. The 2019 project received a Gold at the 2019 BEST Design Awards and has been selected for the Nuit Blanche Toronto international art festival in Canada. A Maori TV video series showcases the 2019 project and features interviews with curators and artists.
