DIMENSION REFLECTION is the fifth and final movie in my Bagan timelapse pentalogy. This movie explores the realms of reflections, using 2, 4, 8 and 16 reflections. To add to the surreal effect of it all I used my blending technique as applied in TimeBlend and TimeScape. No plugins or filters were used for these mirror effects. I created masks in Illustrator and templates in After effects. By moving and rotating the footage within that mask I created the motion for these mirror images. Hand-made, lot of work..
It had been on my mind for many years to do a movie like this. I used to make stills like this in Photoshop. But since Michael Shainblum already did 2 fantastic mirror-timelapes of modern cities, I wanted to do something as far away from that as possible. At Bagan I realised it would be ideal. His subject: A modern day abstract concrete city full of artificial lights and motion, versus my subject: An ancient city of temples in the desert with almost no light or motion.
Knowing the footage wasn’t very suitable for these kind of effects, I accepted the challenge anyway. By keeping the video square, it gave me a different creative freedom and allowed to create other kinds of visuals. It was pretty complicated to set up the templates correctly, but after that I only had to replace the footage and create new keyframes. Since the mask only shows a small portion of the footage, I had to animate the part I wanted to show within that mask. Anyway, what do you think of it?
