I recently got the Sigma 50mm f1.4 with l-mount for my S1 and it quickly became clear that this is a manual focus lens, automatic focus for video, either continuous or letting the camera prefocus while recording is about the worst implementation I have ever experienced, just unusable. But since this type of lens has a focus ring with "semi" hard stops between closeup and infinity you do have much better linear control but the focus throw unfortunately is very short making it more difficult for accurate focuspulls, not impossible, just more difficult.
I went out yesterday to practice focuspulls using the lcd screen and peaking only. The other lens I have so far is the 24-105 and I find it challenging to get my focus right when using the lcd screen but with the 50mm at f1.4 it's much easier as the difference between in and out of focus becomes much more apparent because of the shallower dof, the peaking is easier to see then. Since I"ll be using this lens at the next wedding I"m shooting I wanted to be sure I could nail focus while manually controlling the focus at all times and I"m pretty confident I can do that now.
This video was shot in a very dark church at f1.4, my iso was between 1250 and 3200 most of the time and I used cine-d. Only the last 2 hots outside are with the 24-105, the rest is with the 50. This just to show how you can focuspull with this lens.
