‘Welcome’ is an experimental experience exploring a child's life as they slowly feel more unwelcome around others. I got the idea from watching a branch of my family, a group of people who lived under a firm patriarch in poverty for most of their lives, and seeing how this contrasted against their current life of relative comfort, still living under the shadow of their hard upbringing.

To tell this story I want to use visuals often taken from low angles (so simulate a child's view), dynamic sound design incorporating muddled, confusing narration, and an overall uncomfortable tone to to shape the experience, this all relating back to my own experience watching on as a child as the adults around me tried to escape their pasts in often frightening ways, but also from their perspective as they went down dark paths in the hope of self forgiveness.

I take a lot of inspiration from the works of David Lynch, Zladislav Beksinski and Maya Deren, three visual artists who use the film and photography medium to explore the fanciful and surreal, and who view art as a way to explore the human condition in its less glamorous areas. In terms of David Lynch's short films, I want to emulate him through his use of a black and white, childlike images and through his commitment to the surreal rather then the dadaist, meaning my film will have a small, if confusing narrative throughline that a audience is able to follow. As for Zladislav Beksinski and Maya Deren, I wish to emulate Zladislavs use of interesting contrasting colours, and Mayas sound design, seem best in her short film 'Meshes of the Afternoon'.
