A FILM ABOUT PHYSICAL LABOUR
Coal India portrays people who work under pre-industrial conditions in the coalfelds near Dhanbad, India. The film shows heaviest physical labor which becomes increasingly invisible in our technologized 21st century.
In times of digital transformation, physical work and production seem to be increasingly disregarded within current social, cultural and artistic discourses. In opposition, a focus is being drawn towards the analysis of “new“ social systems which produce “new“ methods of work that will be referred to as immaterial or mental work. Western society may be depicted as a society of immaterial work, in which physical work is being interspersed with structures of the immaterial and substituted by machines and the digital. This leads to the question of whether places of “pure“ physical work still exist. So where is authentic, physical and dirty work still to be found? Assuming that these places are more likely to be outside of Europe, where industry has been transferred to, seems obvious. The shift of media interest imposes the question of whether material work has become obsolete or rather urgent as an object of examination.
