During our fourth intervention in downtown Northfield, we honored the lives of Philando Castile and Breonna Taylor. We also wrote the names of many other unarmed Black people killed by police since 2014.

We are a loosely organized group of people in Northfield, Minnesota, committed to writing on our respective sidewalks, as well as in the downtown area, the names of unarmed Black individuals killed by police since 2014. The list of names is evolving and, depending on the source, the figures oscillate between 1,253 and nearly 1,300.

The gesture of writing these names in a public space, and rewriting them as they continue to be erased, parallels our efforts to remember these individuals at a time when multiple concerns vie for our attention. It is a way of making the loss of lives visible while disrupting a sense of comfort that is based on ignorance and the obliteration of someone's pain. It is a simple gesture, sustained over time, to remind us that the fight for justice is an urgent long-term commitment.

While this gesture cannot replace the many other actions needed to combat systemic racism, it is a tangible and relatively safe action to take, especially for those of us who are currently dealing with health conditions that make large gatherings extra risky.

Somos un grupo de gente en Northfield, Minnesota, organizad@s de manera fluida. El gesto de escribir los nombres en un espacio público y continuar reescribiéndolos a medida que son borrados por el tráfico y el clima, van en paralelo con nuestros esfuerzos por recordar a estas personas en momentos que muchos temas compiten por nuestra atención. Es una manera de hacer estas pérdidas visibles y también de interrumpir una complacencia basada en la ignorancia y obliteración del dolor de muchas gentes. Es un gesto simple, sostenido a través del tiempo, que nos recuerda que la lucha por la justicia es un compromiso urgente y de largo plazo.

Estamos conscientes de que este gesto no puede reemplazar las muchas otras acciones necesarias para combatir el racismo sistémico en el que vivimos. Sin embargo, es un gesto tangible y relativamente seguro, sobre todo para aquellos que sufrimos problemas de salud que hacen riesgoso el participar en actividades con mucha gente.
