In honor of the Easter holiday that just passed, the coming one-year anniversary of the Notre-Dame de Paris fire, and the current angst felt by most during this pandemic I went back to two of my youthful loves: French radicalism and the city of Paris.
On Easter Sunday, April 9, 1950, a member of the Lettrist movement dressed in the robes of a Dominican priest and before a packed Notre-Dame cathedral in mass being broadcast live on French national TV declared "Dieu est mort (God is dead)" in a two minute anticlerical speech, before police saved the young radical, Michel Mourre, from the angry mob of worshipers.
The now mostly forgotten prank, know as the Le scandale de Notre-Dame, or the Notre-Dame Affair, split the radical avant-garde group of artists and activists and gave way to the Situationists a decade later.
