This webinar about writing idea-driven fiction is drawn from Writing on the Dawn Treader (TheHabit.co/Voyage), a six-week online creative writing class.
In this one-hour webinar, Jonathan Rogers will show the ways in which C.S. Lewis transposes argument and idea into character and action. The movement from the interior (idea, abstraction, argument) to the surface (gesture, movement, conflict) is the basis of idea-driven fiction.
In his nonfiction book, The Abolition of Man, C.S. Lewis discusses "men without chests." In a fully human being, the chest (or heart, the seat of magnanimity) mediates between the head (intellect) and the belly (animal appetites). Modern education, according to Lewis, creates men without chests. It seems counterintuitive, but exclusive attention to the intellect, to the neglect of the heart, leaves the intellect at the mercy of the appetites. In The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the idea of the man without a chest takes dramatic form in the character of Eustace Scrubb.
