Unexpected Brothers and Sisters…
“The only way you're going to reach places you've never gone is if you trust God's direction to do things you've never done.” -Germany Kent
“Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father in Heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”(Matthew 12:46-50)
Do you know anyone who has trouble sitting still? Maybe this description fits you. There are people who have to be doing something all of the time. These people like to work and really struggle when there is nothing to do. Sometimes, Christianity is a struggle for these types of people. There are those times when we are told the value of reading the Bible or spending certain periods of time in prayer or meditation. There have even been those who have suggested that people who do not spend a certain amount of time in these solitary pursuits are not the vibrant Christian they could be.
This is unfortunate. It is at this point that some might accuse me of being against prayer, but that is not true. A deep, contemplative prayer life is a wonderful gift to have and discipline to practice. It would be a great thing if more people pursued this path. However, not everyone finds it easy, or even desirable to pursue this life. There are people who find extended times of quiet to be quite the hurdle. For these people, our Biblical passage should be quite affirming. Thankfully, for many of us, those who do the will of God are considered God’s family. I like how this identity is described with a verb of action. I think it is true that the world needs more people of prayer. I also think it is undeniably true that we do not have near enough people who do God’s will. Prayer is a good thing, meditation is a good thing, but, at some point, someone has to do the thing that is needed. Maybe you are one of the people who like to be doing things. If you are, do them for the glory of God.
It is one thing to make that statement, but quite another to live it. How does one live this type of life? First, love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and then do what you want. The point is that loving God with our whole being changes what we desire to do. The second bit of advice would be this – in all of doing, we must remain open to the leading of the Spirit. To people of action, this might be a great prayer. “God, this seems like the right path for me, so I will pursue it with all I am. However, You can stop or re-direct me at any time. I seek Your will.” Our world needs both types of people. While one group is praying like never before, may a group of doers be unleashed as well. Both are critical aspects of loving like the Serving King…
