The theory I’m using in my project 12 Principles of NEW Animation is The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge by Jean-François Lyotard. He defines the postmodern as incredulity towards metanarratives and the questioning of all the so-called “truth.”

Thus, I chose to create my own 12 principles of animation as a way to break down and question the original 12 basic principles of animation which introduced by the Disney animators Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas in their 1981 book The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation. These 12 principles are: Squash & Stretch, Anticipation, Staging, Straight Ahead Action & Pose to Pose, Follow Through & Overlapping Action, Slow In & Slow out, Arc, Secondary Action, Timing, Exaggeration, Solid Drawing and Appeal.

In order to make the viewers to rethink and question these principles, 12 Principles of NEW Animation will introduce totally contrary and opposite contents: Keep the Form, No Expectation, Ambiguity, In Between First, Stop is Stop, Hustle in & Hustle out, Straights, Primary Action, Constant Velocity, Understatement, Shitty drawing and Repulsion.
