THE SPORTS BUZZ Game of the Week featured the Class 2A Meridian Lady Jackets knocking off the Rio Vista Lady Eagles, 42-35, in the second round District 12-2A matchup Tuesday night at the Yellowjacket Gymnasium.
With the win, Meridian (5-5 in district, 13-14 overall) maintains sole possession of fourth place in district with two regular season game remaining, setting up a key showdown with postseason implications at Frost (6-4, 16-14) postponed until Monday due to the ice & snow winter weather event across Central Texas.
Although the Lady Jackets jumped out to an early lead, Rio Vista (0-11, 6-26) continued to battle back repeatedly throughout the game. In fact, Meridian built a commanding 10-point advantage in the fourth period, but the Lady Eagles pulled to within three points late in the contest.
Senior Mackenzie Lane led the Lady Jackets with 15 points and nine rebounds, followed by sophomore Canyon Stauffer and senior America Ramirez with 10 points and five rebounds each, while sophomore Eve Dirkse led Meridian with 10 rebounds.
