This was my second Beatles video, published at YouTube on November 1, 2014.
Even as I found myself discovering the music of Glenn Miller in my grandparents' attic, and a lot of other Big Band era music that used to belong to my aunt, I still went on listening to Top 40 AM rock and pop. This would be the year that the type of American rock and pop music that had been dominating the music scene since the start of the 1960's, as well as the early British invasion rock that had joined the mix in early 1964, would both undergo radical changes over the course of the spring and summer of '66. By autumn the landscape would be completely alien in comparison.
I was in the 7th grade in junior high, still carrying around the little black box of a transistor radio I had owned since 4th grade. Winter was giving way to spring, the trees still bare and flakes of snow stubbornly clinging to the frozen grass by the sidewalk that led to the back entrance of the school (as well as the football field behind the almost medieval-looking fence that surrounded the playing area). You could see your breath hang in the cold air like the smoke I would produce from those early days of cigarette smoking. A friend of mine who thought I was not really all that interested in rock music because he knew I played trumpet in the junior high school orchestra and thought he'd be funny and ask me what my favorite rock song was. My answer came naturally enough and without any puzzling or consideration on my part. "Nowhere Man" by The Beatles ... it's my favorite song right now. I think it's the best song they're playing in fact." Wow, he said he thought I was a Glenn Miller freak (since I had mentioned my discovery of the stacks of 78 rpm records before), to which I replied I was but I was also a big fan of The Beatles .. and always had been. In any event he digged that I digged The Beatles. I guess he felt there was still some hope for any four-eyed nerdy kid who played in the junior high school orchestra after all.
Here in the United States "Nowhere Man" was released as a single ONLY in February 1966, later appearing on the Capitol Records album Yesterday and Today. It reached #3 on Billboard and #2 on Cash Box on April 2, 1966.
My love of creating Beatles music videos abruptly came to an end on YouTube in late summer 2015 when most fan-based Beatles songs were blocked worldwide or else restricted to a handful of countries. I don't think that situation has changed ... at least the last I knew.
