Reality Boost is a course for young people. It is designed to take the addicting parts of tech (particularly social media & gaming) and apply them to real world, physical activities and collaborative relationships. Our goal is not to eliminate tech from their lives but simply to provide a balance of tech and real adventure and face-to-face relationships.

We believe that real life can be more awesome than virtual reality or augmented reality. We see obvious benefits to tech and gaming, but we also see too many young people wasting their best days in front of a screen. We want our youth to experience their best life!

Collectively, our team has degrees in psychology, counseling, and education. We want to offer adventure courses. Through our lessons, activities, challenges, and team projects we will introduce new real-life adventures to the students in the program.

Students will experience a variety of lessons at each visit such as
Earth’s Magnetism class
Orienteering class
Dendrology class
Outdoor survival skills class
High ropes course class
Rock climbing class
Mountain biking class
Local mammals class
Wildlife tracking class
Water skiing class
Wake boarding class

Wake surfing class

Local aquatic creatures class
Paddle sports class
Meramec River Canoe Class Trip
Caving class
Native American history class
Building shelters class

Also, there will be challenging and fun assessments and challenges, using skills learned in class, in teams to promote collaboration.

Not only do we want kids to experience outdoor activities like mountain biking, kayaking, such as a typical summer camp off…. But instead of just experiencing it, we want to create challenges that require teamwork, skills, and knowledge to complete. (We will be teaching lessons to cover skills (such as orienteering) and knowledge (such as identifying animal tracks). Think: like a grown up/extreme treasure hunt or capture the flag game.

Let us say again; our goal is not to eliminate technology from anyone’s life. However there are some youth & young adults that may be over-using tech. This can sometimes lead to physical health problems, mental health problems, including anxiety and depression, problems in relationships, difficulties in school or job, and other problems.

Some of the research says that people do not become addicted to social media, but actually to feeling connected, and feeling a sense of belonging, and the dopamine hit you get when someone likes what you post (which is just another aspect of feeling valued and connected and part of a community).

Along the same lines, people are not addicted to gaming as much as they are addicted to a sense of adventure, taking risks, challenge, the feeling of success. When it’s a multiplayer game there is collaboration, teamwork, and a social group involved.

While there are many benefits to technology, it is very clear that too much becomes an issue when it interferes with relationships and responsibilities (like job, studies, getting physical activity).

On the other hand, when you talk about getting outside, fresh air, physical activity, into nature…. The research shows that there are major physical health benefits and mental health benefits.

So the idea is keep using tech, and add in a balance of physical activity.

What if we could create a place where kids could have the benefits from the social media and gaming (feeling connected, a sense of belonging, being valued in a community, a sense of adventure / challenge / feeling of success, collaboration, teamwork, and social interaction) PLUS gives them the benefits of nature, fresh air, physical activity, opportunity to take risks such as mountain biking rock climbing (so there is adrenaline involved, but then they get a sense of competence and success as they advance and improve).

If we can involve young adults in these physical activities, outdoors in beautiful places, then maybe we can combat some of the depression, anxiety, and isolation that has become common in our society when we are using our devices non-stop. Not only will that help improve mental health, but physical health benefits as well.

We want to get kids involved in real life adventures and show them how amazing real life can be. They can have the adventure, adrenaline, challenge, competence, success, collaboration, teamwork, and more .

We don’t want to eliminate technology from anyone’s life or downplay the benefits and advantages that tech brings to our lives. We just want to find a balance.
