These test methods for Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) are being developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) with sponsorship from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T). They are being standardized through the ASTM International Standards Committee on Homeland Security Applications; Response Robots (ASTM E54.09). They are referenced in the National Fire Protection Association Standard for Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Used for Public Safety Operations (NFPA 2400) as Job Performance Requirements to focus training and evaluate remote pilot proficiency.

Several of these bucket leveling stands work together to form test lanes and orbits. This 24in bucket leveling stand is used whenever the terrain is relatively flat, such as sports fields/courts, parking lots, or indoors. The post does not enable elevating the angled buckets to accommodate hills. It weighs approximately 25lbs using pressure treated lumber.

It stows in a 7x7x60in collapsed package. Very compact and sturdy. Velcro straps are shown holding the four angled legs together and the four outriggers are screwed together with an extra stow block using the same (4) 4in screws already there to secure the legs.

Parts and Assembly Instructions:

Lumber:
(1) 4x4x24in post.

(4) 2x4x24in legs with 45deg taper cut tall both ends. They are attached to the center post at 16in from the post bottom. Attach all four hinges first to the post to get them all even, then add each tapered 2x4x24in leg

(4) 2x4x24in outriggers with 1-1/2in double bevel on one end so it rotates when assembled to the post. They are attached 4in from the post bottom with a single long 4in screw aligned with the bevel while the 2x4 is centered along the 4x4. The outrigger should rotate without exceeding the 4x4 edge.

(1) 2x4x12in T top affixed with two 4in screws So it can’t rotate.

Fasteners:
All screws should be at least 3-1/2in long or 4in, especially the ones that enable rotation. The Hinges require 1-1/2in and 1in screws near the tapered end.

Hardware:
Hinges are optional if not folding, but as you can see from the video, they’re ideal!
