The numbers are concerning. “We do know that our seatbelt usage average is 37 percent which is not good. We also have helmet use which is at 64 percent right now. That number is also going down,” said Lee Health trauma injury prevention coordinator, Syndi Bultman. On average, Bultman says 700 crashes a year are reported in our area. Of those, 10 percent are teenage drivers.

“When teens are on the road, we really want them to, first off, buckle up every time they get into that vehicle. We want them to not use cell phones, not drink and drive. We always want to make sure they have their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road,” said Bultman.

She encourages parents to teach teens how to drive in different conditions and times—including morning, evening, and when it’s raining. “We really want parents to practice with them as much as they possibly can,” she said.

It’s also important to remind teens about the dangers of distracted driving. “About 10 percent of them are teen drivers that are distracted. In 2019, they did a survey and had 39 percent of teens say they have texted or read an email while they are driving,” Bultman said.

Limiting other passengers and making sure teens are well rested before they get behind the wheel are all tips that can keep them safe on the road.
