Transcription of Andrew's reflection from Middle School Closing Exercises on June 4, 2019:
8th grade has been a rollercoaster with many ups and downs -- but more ups than downs. From school to sports or even just talking with my friends at lunch and recess. This year has been the longest roller coaster, but one of the best too. I’ve created so many memories from working hard, sports and just hanging out.
My first memory is when we tackled a three-month-long major project, the Chicago History Fair. The amount of work took a toll on me, but after the project was done, the sense of accomplishment and the weight off of my shoulders was one of the greatest feelings.
Sports is not only for the game, but it is also a way to create friendships and connections that have made me closer to my friends and my teammates. After a game of hard work, blood, and sweat the bus rides were a moment of celebration or remorse. Shouting, screaming and singing to songs makes you remember and live in the present moment. Not to worry about the homework waiting for me at home, but to be there and create memories with your friends. My most memorable bus ride was the Undefeated Maroon Teams Elgin game when we won 6-0. We shook the bus with our happiness and energy from an awesome game. The way we all came together on the field and off is something that is priceless.
My final favorite memory was the Washington D.C trip. The D.C trip showed who my classmates really are. Visiting so many Museums and Memorials was very tiring, but made me recognize how much I will miss the peers and the wonderful teachers that we will be leaving this year. D.C showed us the history of the United States of America but also the future. Many days opened my eyes to the sacrifices that people have made for our freedom, and how they all connected us as a grade.
In all, this year, I haven't been spending every day, game, and moment with my grade, I have been spending it with my second family, creating an unbreakable bond between each other that will be remembered for the rest of our lives. Living in the present moment created memories that have made us cry, laugh, and smile. The memories we created have been engraved into our minds.
And just like Andy Bernard from The Office said, "I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them."
