Crete | Matala Beach. Matala beach, famous for being a popular hippie destination in the 70's, is located 70 Km south west of Heraklion. You can drive your car towards Phaestos archeological site and then follow the signs to Matala.
There is also a road from Mories village. If you don't feel like driving then use the bus services from Heraklion.
Once you get to the beach you will be fascinated by the caves on the rock peninsula. It is a sandy beach with crystal clear waters. Have in mind that due to frequent western winds, there might be large waves, so you have to be extra careful with your children.
The beach offers umbrellas, sunbeds, toilets, lifeguard, water sports and everything that a visitor could ask for. There are also many options for accommodation and eating.
