9. Centralia, Pennsylvania
Located in eastern Pennsylvania, the borough of Centralia is almost a ghost town but there are still some people holding out, keeping it alive. At one point, 2000 people lived in the coal mining town. Underneath the town, a massive fire has been burning since 1962 when the coal mine caught fire.
8. Santa Cruz Del Islote, Colombia
In the middle of the Caribbean, there is a tiny island about the size of two football fields called Santa Cruz del Islote. With 1,200 residents, it is one of the most densely populated islands on the planet. As you can probably imagine, life works a little differently when that many people are working with such limited space.
7. PhinDeli Town Buford, Wyoming
Before it was renamed PhinDeli Town in 2017, Buford, Wyoming consisted of just three residents and five structures. Situated at an 8,000-foot altitude between the cities of Laramie and Cheyenne, Buford was founded in 1866 as a military outpost during the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad.
6. Setenil De Las Bodegas
Located northwest of the Spanish city of Ronda, the town of Setenil de las Bodegas is built right into the side of the Cadiz Mountains, making it unique among the pueblos blancos, or “white villages,” of Andalucia.
5. Tangier, Virginia
Located in the Chesapeake Bay on Tangier Island in Virginia State is a small fishing community whose population of around 720 harbors a dialect and accent that sound more English than American to the untrained ear.
4. Coober Pedy, Australia
Most of the 1,700-resident population of Coober Pedy, Australia lives underground. Nicknamed the “Opal Capital of the World” and located about 526 miles (846 km) north of Adelaide, Coober Pedy has supplied most of the world’s gem-quality opal since the first specimen was discovered there in 1915, and is home to over 70 opal fields.
3. Ocracoke Island, North Carolina
Ocracoke is a barrier island off the North Carolina coast. On one end lives a group of around 150 people, nicknamed the “High Tiders” (or “Hoi Toiters”), who speak what’s known as the “Ocracoke brogue,” a distinctive dialect unlike anything else heard in the United States -- or North America, for that matter.
2. Hallstatt, China
Constructed starting in 2012, the village and housing development of Hallstatt, China resembles a picturesque Austrian town to the T. Located in Guangdong province, the still-under-construction town is being built by the China Minmetals mining company, and is designed to be a near-exact replica of Hallstatt, Austria.
1. Fredericksburg, Texas
Fredericksburg, Texas is where a massive wave of German immigrants planted their roots during the 1830s. They planted said roots so firmly that today, the town is known as the home of something called the German Texan dialect.
