What lies beneath: probing the cultural depths of a nature conservation conflict in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland (2012, 5:21)

Ruth Brennan
Scottish Association for Marine Science, Oban, Scotland.

This research aimed to gain insights into the roots of a conflict around a marine protected area by exploring the local socio-cultural and historical contexts of the small island community of Barra, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. In particular, I wanted to understand better the islanders’ connections to the sea and what “conservation” meant for them. My conversations with people on Barra suggested that they have strong and particular relationships with the sea. These relationships are part of a bigger conservation picture that includes both humans and the bio-physical environment as an intertwined system, working together. However, these relationships are not easy to articulate. This photo-text presentation tries to make these relationships more visible, and to open up an understanding of conservation that better reflects humans as an integral part of ’nature’.
