스페이스 원 은 작가들이 운영하는 공간으로 국내 외 작가들의 실험적인 현대 미술을 선보인다. 또한 국내외 작가 및 다른 전시 공간과의 교류 프로젝트를 진행하며 다양성 및 독립성을 지향한다.

스페이스원은 지난 5 년간, 5개의 키워드인 대안, 실험, 국제, 협업 그리고 다양성을 지향하고 지원하며, 200인 이상의 작가, 30개 이상의 국가와 영화, 퍼포먼스, 음악, 무용, 철학, 사회학, 과학, IT 등 분야의 전문가들과 함께했다. 나아가 작고 큰 다양한 갤러리, 기관, 대학교등과 더 폭넓은 외부 전시공간과의 협업 전시, 강연, 패널 토크, 워크숍, 영화상영회, 퍼포먼스등 다양한 프로젝터성 프로그램을 진행해왔다. 2017년 서울 도시 건축 비엔날레, 2017년 독일문화원 동아시아 지역 프로젝트, 2018년 서울문화재단 소셜 프로젝트, 2018년 서울 디지탈재단 프로젝트, 2018년 동남아시아 아트 레지던시 미팅 아티스트가 진행하는 비엔날레등에 참여하며 더 많은 기회와 폭넓은 기획을 선보였다.

올해 5년이 된 스페이스원에서는 지속적으로 다양한 작가들을 지원하고 확장하는 프로그램을 만들어 나가고 유지하기 위해 크라우드 펀딩을 론칭한다.

크라우드 펀딩으로 모금된 기금은 스페이스원과 같이 작업하는 작가들에게 더 안전하고 따뜻한 공간을 만들기 위해 사용될 예정이다.

Space One in 2014 as an independent, artist-run space.

What started as a space to support artists to really gather, experiment and just meet other passionate artists and or art practitioners, has now grown into an established art platform with a wide range of network, resources, and data that could help continue support upcoming and established artists.

Focusing on 5 keywords: alternative, experimental, international, collaborations and diversity, Space One has now worked with over 200 artists, from over 30 countries and with multiple disciplines ranging from film, performance, music, dance, philosophy, sociology, science, IT to name a few.

We have also had amazing partnerships and support from various small to large organizations, institutions and Universities including Seoul City, Seoul foundation for Arts and Culture, Seoul Design Foundation, Seoul Digital Foundation, Seoul National University, KAIST, DongGuk University, Chung-Ang University, Goethe-Institut Korea and more.

Space One has organized projects including multi-venue exhibitions, lectures, panel talks, workshops, screenings, performances and other events with a more inclusive approach, having the great honor of being part of the

Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2017;Goethe-Institut East Asia Project 2017; Seoul foundation for arts and culture’s Social Project 2018; Seoul Digital Foundation Project in 2018; Southeast Asian Art Residencies Meeting VVVA EXCON 2018 (artist-run biennale) and more.

As we celebrate our 5-year anniversary, we also face with new challenges as the city of Seoul is developing and getting more and more expensive and regulations becoming more strict.

The first challenge of Space One is its SAFETY issues, as it’s a 50 year old building, it needs various safety issues updated such as the rooftop fencing, rooftop stability, railing and new materials for the steep and slippery stairs.

The second challenge is basic INSULATION AND HEATING during the winter. Seoul’s temperature in the winter drops to below zero temperatures throughout December to March. With a huge lack of insulation and heating system, Space One is often colder than outside, that in the winter it’s simply impossible to use or the heating is too expensive to sustain in the winters.

The third and final challenge is the lack of OFFICE space. Because we’ve been jumping around office spaces, to spaces that are supported by others, the distance to the gallery space has limited various activities and access. To resolve this, we’re hoping to renovate the storage space next to the gallery space that is currently missing a section of a wall, to fill in the wall, create a window with better insulation and heating system for artists to have a space to stay warm during installation, invigilation and de-installation during exhibitions, to create a better base for meeting space, events and other uses.

We’re organizing a fundraiser exhibition in Seoul as well as this crowd funding to ask for your help to continue these efforts and to support the amazing art being created in Korea!
