My background is not computer science, but I appreciate it as a creative medium. For Self Portrait, I experimented in j5.ps, using its coding structure as a scaffolding to deconstruct, reorganize, and explore my inner self, as it is represented within the complexities of reality, online reality, and family and cultural contexts. I have always had a lingering sense of ambiguity. My family practices Buddhism. It offers some insights, but its implementation is rigid. Many people in China long to understand themselves and the world but are limited by society and culture. In response, many create a virtual self online. This interactive work allows participants to engage the visual representation of my self-exploration within those contexts. Moving the mouse over different lines produces vibrations, like playing a guitar. Religious symbols form rings of enlightenment around the central image. The eyes follow the mouse but are confined to the screen.
