As my Dissertation discusses the use of Gamification in various media and how the concept of ‘Learn through Play’ could be a method to enrich young children’s education, my Special Study is inspired by retro style games. I have created an animation piece using After Effects and Illustrator to demonstrate how the in-game screens would transition from one screen to the next when hosted on a games console such as a Gameboy. All of these sections play a selected part of my Dissertation accompanied by relevant illustrations and images. For the font, I have selected Marediv, a pixel inspired font in order to match the font choices typically used in retro style games. To accompany the animation piece, I have selected the audio ‘Right Back To You’ by Wizwars, a Chiptune genre piece to replicate retro aesthetics. I have selected a games console to host the contents of my Special Study to represent how learning does not just have to take place using a book, or with a teacher guiding you, but ways of learning and enriching a child's mind can also take place using mediums more traditionally associated with play, such as toys or games.
